Autonomous AI SRE Crew for Self-Healing Kubernetes Operations
In-cluster multi-agent AI SRE system built with Python, CrewAI, local GPU-accelerated Ollama LLMs, K8sGPT, and kubectl-ai
Creator & Principal AI/Platform Architect
24/7 L1 Triage
Autonomous in-cluster investigation of pod crashes, OOMKills, and misconfigurations within seconds of detection.
100% Private
Zero cluster logs or telemetry sent to third-party cloud LLM providers via local Ollama GPU inference.
Open Source
Published complete reference architectures and repos for CrewAI SRE, K8sGPT Operator, local AI stack, and kubectl-ai.
01 // Engineering Problem
On-call SRE teams spend excessive hours triaging repetitive Level-1 Kubernetes incidents—such as CrashLoopBackOff pods, OOMKills, image pull errors, and broken Service selectors—while commercial cloud AI tools raise data-privacy concerns for cluster logs.
02 // Business & Operational Context
We needed a privacy-preserving, 100% self-hosted AI SRE capability running directly inside the Kubernetes cluster that continuously monitors Golden Signals, inspects pod logs and events, determines root causes, and executes guarded remediation actions.
Architecture Topology // Autonomous AI SRE Crew for Self-Healing Kubernetes Operations
Golden Signal Watcher
Monitors Kubernetes Warning events, Prometheus alerts, OOMKills (Exit 137), and CrashLoopBackOff transitions.
Local Ollama + NVIDIA GPU
100% air-gapped LLM inference running inside Kubernetes via NVIDIA GPU Operator and Open WebUI.
CrewAI + K8sGPT Forensics
Correlates pod logs, `kubectl describe` events, and manifest specs to isolate configuration vs. transient failures.
Scoped Remediation Agent
Executes safe, RBAC-bounded actions (pod restart, rollout undo, or structured Slack/PagerDuty escalation).

DECISION 01
Run LLM inference locally inside the cluster with Ollama and NVIDIA GPU Operator rather than external SaaS APIs
Production pod logs and Kubernetes events frequently contain sensitive internal topology, IP addresses, or stack traces that must never leave the enterprise perimeter.
Requires GPU-enabled worker nodes (or Apple Silicon/dedicated inference hosts) and model quantization tuning.
DECISION 02
Use a specialized multi-agent CrewAI architecture with strict Kubernetes RBAC boundaries
Separating the Watcher, Forensics Diagnostician, and Remediation Executor agents prevents hallucinated destructive commands; the Remediation Agent can only invoke pre-approved Kubernetes API verbs.
Slightly higher token orchestration overhead per incident in exchange for deterministic safety.
Zero-Trust Security Guardrails
- Zero external API egress: all telemetry, logs, and prompts remain inside the cluster network boundary.
- Dedicated Kubernetes ServiceAccount for the SRE Crew with strictly scoped RoleBindings (no cluster-admin or namespace deletion privileges).
- Human-in-the-loop escalation path for structural manifest bugs that cannot be resolved via safe rollout restarts.
SRE & Reliability Engineering
- Integrated K8sGPT Operator continuous scanning metrics into Prometheus and Grafana dashboards.
- Idempotent remediation cooldown timers prevent infinite restart loops on persistently broken application builds.
Engineering Challenge
Kubernetes clusters generate thousands of events, container logs, and metric time-series every minute. When a microservice enters CrashLoopBackOff or suffers an OOMKilled termination at 3:00 AM, on-call engineers must manually run kubectl get events, kubectl logs --previous, and inspect resource limits before deciding whether to restart the workload or escalate to the application squad.
Solution Architecture
We built a complete Local AI-Driven SRE Stack spanning three open-source repositories (autonomous-ai-sre-crew, local-ai-stack, and k8sgpt-cli-operator-setup):
1. GPU-Accelerated Local LLM Infrastructure (local-ai-stack)
Using MicroK8s / Kubernetes, the NVIDIA GPU Operator, and Ollama, we provisioned an in-cluster inference service capable of running models like llama3 and qwen2.5-coder locally with zero external network dependencies.
2. Multi-Agent SRE Crew (autonomous-ai-sre-crew)
Deployed as a Kubernetes Deployment bound to a least-privilege ServiceAccount, the Python CrewAI system coordinates specialized agents:
- Telemetry & Event Watcher: Detects failing pods and anomalous Golden Signals.
- Forensic Diagnostician: Fetches recent container logs and Kubernetes events, synthesizing a structured Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Remediation Executor: If the RCA identifies a transient deadlock or upstream timeout, executes a controlled rolling restart; if it detects a code defect or OOM limit breach, dispatches a rich diagnostic report with the exact YAML fix.
